CHAPEL OF SAINT PETER

00:00 / 01:46
20-CAPELLA-DE-LES-ÀNIMES.jpg

The altarpiece of this chapel was blessed on June 29, 1829. It is dominated by the polychrome wood carving of Saint Peter. On the right side of the altarpiece, inside a niche with a cupola, we find the image of Saint Cosme carrying a book in his right hand and the palm of martyrdom in his left. In the second body of the altarpiece, inside a niche, we can see the baked earth image of the Virgin of Hope, who was the patron saint of weavers. Let us remember the importance that the weavers and later the weaving factories had in Sóller. Every year, in December, the weavers celebrated their feast day with great solemnity. In fact, the weavers' guild paid for the gilding and decoration of the niche where the image of its patron saint is found. On the left wall of the chapel we can see the painting of Saint Andrew the Apostle carrying a book and the characteristic cross of his martyrdom. With his right hand he seems to preach. Below the painting of Saint Andrew we find a painting with Blessed Sister Francinaina Cirer, patron saint of Majorcan catechists. On the right wall of the chapel we can see the painting of Santa Margaret, who carries a cross and a palm of martyrdom in her right hand. She steps on a dragon which is a representation of the evil one.
