ALTARPIECE OF SAINT GREGORY THE GREAT
In the central part of the altarpiece we can see the painting of Saint Gregory the Great wearing the pontifical tiara and a cross in his right hand.
In the upper part of the altarpiece there is a broken pediment and in the middle, at the top of the altarpiece, we find the painting that represents Saint Lawrence with a grill in his right hand, a symbol of his martyrdom.
The carving of a Virgin that can be seen inside an urn is interesting. It is an image from the 14th century that was mutilated in this temple due to a corsair invasion, which the town of Sóller suffered on May 11, 1561. The corsairs entered the Parish to steal the treasure and did much damage, as well as killing to a church priest. This image has been exhibited under the name of Virgin of Hope in the Lonja of Palma, at “Nuestra Señora Santa María” exhibition of Majorcan art, and in the Washington exhibition entitled “Cultural Confluences in the Mediterranean”.
